JAM GADANG

Didirikan oleh Controleur Rook Maker pada tahun 1926 yang berlokasi di pusat kota, bangunan ini dirancang oleh Putra Minangkabau Jazid dan Sutan Gigih Ameh. Jam Gadang ini merupakan lambang Kota Wisata Bukittinggi yang dikelilingi oleh taman bunga dan pohon-pohon pelindung, yang dapat memberikan kesejukan dan berfungsi sebagai alun-alun kota. Dari puncaknya kita dapat rnenikmati dan menyaksikan betapa indahnya alam sekitar Bukittinggi vang dihiasi Gunung, Merapi, Gunung Singgalang, Gunung Sago dan Ngarai Sianok. Salah satu keunikan Jam Gadang adalah angka empat yang ditulis dengan empat buah angka satu Romawi yang seharusnya ditulis dengan angka empat Romawi.

Disekitar Jam Gadang ini juga telah dibangun taman yang menambah semarak dan indahnya lokasi tersebut dengan berbagai bunga dan pepohonan serta fasilitas tempat duduk dan digunakan untuk menikmati pemandangan kota yang sangat menawan, sambil menikmati makanan spesifik. Selain itu disekitar Jam Gadang terdapat Istana Bung Hatta atau Tri Arga dan terdapat sebuah plaza yaitu Plaza Bukittinggi.

Jam gadang pada masa Indonesia dikuasai belanda, pada bagian atap nya bberupa patung ayam berkokok, dan pada masa jepang berkuasa, atap nya ini menyerupai atap pagoda, dan sesudah Indonesia merdeka, diganti dengan atap bagonjong, seperti atap Rumah Gadang.

Lokasinya sangat dekat dengan pasar atas, yaitu salah satu pasal yang menjual aneka souvenir, dan barang yang sudah jadi, seperti sepatu, baju, dll, selain pasar atas ada lagi pasar bawah, yaitu pasar yang menjual segala kebutuhan sehari / pokok. Kemudian ada Pasar Aur kuning, yaitu pasar yang menjual barang dengan partai besar, dipasar ini tidak banyak took / kedai yang melayani eceran. Harga dari ketiga pasar ini untuk barnag yang sudah jadi adalah Aur kuning, Karena kalau baju / celana didatangkan langsung dari Tanah Abang Jakarta, atau seperti mukena, kita barang akan dihantar pengrajin nya ke pasar, jika kebetulan berjumpa dengan pengrajin ini, kita bias tawar langsung, dan harga pun murah disbanding denga yang lain.

Pada sore hari, jam gadang dijadikan temapt berkumpul nya masyarakat bukittinggi, baik muda ataupun tua yang menghabiskan waktu dijam gfadang.atau bagi wisatawan yang kebetulan lagi berada di bukittinggi. Bagi yang malas balik kehotel atau kerumah dengan taksi ataupun angkutan umum, disebelah jam gadang ini terdapat parkir khusus angkutran tradisional yaitu bendi ( andong ). Sebelum kita naik bagus Tanya dulu sama kusir, tentyang harga, karena tidak sedikit kusir bendi ini yang suka meminta harga seenak hatinya saja, atau dibawa berputar putar dulu, jadi nanti penumpang akan diminta untuk membayar dengan harga yang tinggi.
